MILLWALL have confirmed the signing of Adam Mayor from Morecambe.
The 19-year-old attacker has signed a long-term deal after his move from the League Two side for an undisclosed fee.
Despite not turning 20 until April, Mayor has already played 67 senior professional games, scoring seven goals.
Liverpool-born Mayor is a left-footed attacker who has featured mostly on the wing but can also play through the middle. He possesses a powerful shot and is also a threat taking set-pieces.
Earlier this season, Mayor was called up to be on standby for Lions boss Joe Edwards’ England under-20s. His Morecambe manager at the time, Derek Adams, said: “Adam Mayor has done really well since joining the first-team environment. He has kicked on and is learning every week.
“For a 19-year-old to be as strong as he is going forward and to understand his defensive duties by tracking back and making tackles like he does is fantastic and I’m really happy for him.’’
Mayor is Millwall’s first permanent signing of the January transfer window after the loan arrivals of Japhet Tanganga and Michael Obafemi.
“Adam is a young player with a lot of potential, so we are delighted he has chosen to join Millwall,” Alex Aldridge, director of football operations and recruitment, said on Millwall’s official website. “He had several clubs interested in signing him.
“He is someone we have been monitoring closely since the start of last season and we feel now is the right time to bring him to the club, to make the step up to the Championship and work under Joe and our backroom staff.
“There is a lot of further growth and development in Adam and we look forward to seeing him progress over the next few years.”
Mayor is currently serving a suspension for accumulated yellow cards. He will miss this Saturday’s game at Hull City before becoming available for the following weekend’s trip to Coventry City.
