JED Wallace believes Mahlon Romeo is one of the best five full-backs in the Championship – and praised the defender for delivering in a demanding role in the side.
Romeo and Wallace played down Millwall’s right flank in Gary Rowett’s first game in charge against Stoke last weekend, with Romeo a marauding presence in attack, moving into the space left by the winger, who frequently moved inside to join the attack.
Romeo and Wallace were involved in the opening goal in the Lions’ 2-0 win, with the latter crossing for Ben Thompson to flick home.
“He’s a modern-day full-back, wing-back,” Wallace said. “Mahlon’s strength is going forward, people can’t live with him. I thought last weekend he was outstanding, especially in the first half, outstanding. It was pretty much a faultless performance from him.
“Mahlon won’t mind me saying he’s been a bit up and down at times, but I think he’s in the top five of full-backs in this division all day long.
“We do put a lot of impetus on Mahlon to defend every ball and then when you get the ball can you run us 80 yards up the pitch.
“It’s a difficult job that he has in the team but he’s really well thought of in the dressing room. Without a doubt he’s one of our best players.
“Under the new manager, who was a very successful full-back, I think you’re only going to see Mahlon going from strength to strength.
“It’s important that we can keep hold of him so he can keep doing what he does, and that’s getting opposition teams going the other way.”
