JOE Martin is hoping not to repeat the mistakes of Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Burton Albion when Wycombe visit The Den on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions have the chance to make up for the frustrating defeat to the Brewers and put themselves in the frame for a possible high-profile third round draw.
Millwall will be without Mark Beevers this weekend – the third game in a row boss Neil Harris will be without a suspended defender – and Martin acknowledges he has to reconsider his own approach to avoid any future bans.
“I suppose I’ve got to be a little bit more careful sometimes,” he admitted. “I’m a little bit over-aggressive. I’ve got to tone it down a little bit sometimes and not get booked so easily, but a couple of them I had to take.
“But I have to try and look at not getting booked so much, I don’t want to be missing games.”
Defender Martin echoed the frustration of his manager on Tuesday night in being unhappy at the nature of the goals Millwall conceded.
Damien McCrory shot Burton ahead after Millwall had failed to anticipate the danger at a set-piece, while Martin felt the second goal – after a rapid Burton break – was also avoidable.
“We shouldn’t have been two goals down in the first place,” Martin admitted. “That’s the most disappointing thing. We’re capable of beating any team in this league.
“They’re a good side, they made it scrappy, getting on to us in the first half but we’re good enough to do better.
“It’s just disappointing to concede from a set-piece, full stop, so we need to knuckle down on them.
“We don’t really know how (McCrory) was in so much space but he shouldn’t have been so we’ll look at that and try not let it happen again.
“The second (goal), they’ve broke on us, and we didn’t really set ourselves right. Maybe we could have shown (Burton winger Mark Duffy) down the line or stopped it in some way, but it’s just disappointing again, you can’t let those goals go in.”
Martin, meanwhile, is looking forward to Saturday’s FA Cup second round fixture against Wycombe, but he recognises Millwall are in a fight to earn their place in the potentially lucrative third round.
“It’ll be a tough game,” Martin said. “Especially with them coming to The Den, they’ve got nothing to lose. We need to make sure we take the initiative and start on the front foot.
“With our quality we should win the game. It’s not going to be easy just because it’s a League Two team.
“They’ll make it difficult, they’ll make it scrappy and we’ve just got to make sure our quality shows in the end.”
