The headteacher of an Elephant and Castle school has been given an OBE in the New Year’s honour list.
Matt Jones, who is the principal of Ark Globe Academy near the New Kent Road, was given the award for services to education.
Alongside his work at the school, he is chair of the Southwark Association of Secondary Headteachers (SASH), which addresses issues in local secondary schools and their communities and became executive principal of Brixton’s Ark Evelyn Grace Academy in 2019. Mr Jones also founded The Elephant Group charity, which helps children from difficult backgrounds get into the top UK universities.

He was a footballer before he became a teacher, making five league appearances for Southend United before slipping down the divisions.
Mr Jones, 51, said: “I’m humbled and very proud. This award recognises the incredible work of so many brilliant people who’ve helped make Ark Globe what it is today.
“Our team and I are passionate about embedding lifelong learning into the school and the local community, and everyone has worked hard to create a culture of aspiration and high expectations for all our students.”
