Schools across the UK are being invited to enter a competition which could see them win a tour around Sir Francis Drake’s ship for their entire class.
In honour of its 50th anniversary, The Golden Hinde Museum ship is running a creative competition for schools across the UK – where they could win an educational tour of the ship for their class.
The Golden Hinde, moored at Bankside, is a life-size replica of the one Sir Francis Drake used to circle the globe in a voyage from 1577 to 1580.
Despite being a replica, it has etched its own journey, successfully completing its own circumnavigation, numerous Atlantic crossings, and a distance of over 100,000 nautical miles.
Now, the ship invites primary school pupils to design a special 50th birthday card for The Golden Hinde. A selection of submissions will be exhibited on board the ship for visitors to see. See the entry pack for primary schools here.
Additionally, secondary schools are encouraged to use their poetic prowess to write captivating poems around the theme of sailing or the sea. See the entry pack for secondary schools here.
The entries will be evaluated by former crewmate and one-time resident artist, Zillah Richards, alongside ship navigator, Jilly Francis. The judges will be looking for entries that show creativity, and originality, as well as those that showcase The Golden Hinde’s history.
Participating schools need to submit their entries no later than Monday, May 22. The winners of this competition will be publicly announced on May 31, adding to the excitement surrounding The Golden Hinde’s anniversary celebrations.
