An “embarrassing rubbish mountain” in Borough is a grim sight for tourists and residents, a local councillor has warned.
Borough and Bankside councillor Victor Chamberlain posted a photo on Twitter of the unsightly mound on Park Street on Thursday, August 3.
The leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrat group, the main opposition group in the borough wrote: “Very concerned to see the scale of uncollected waste and recycling on Park Street last night.
“This is not acceptable. I’ve asked Southwark Council to urgently remove it and investigate how such a large quantity of waste has been able to compile.”
The photo shows bin bags piling up high on the bins, with many left sagging on the ground.
The grim picture comes amidst rising concerns about the state of Southwark’s streets.
In June, Peckham business owners on Choumert Road told the News their road had become “a wasteland” because of accumulating “piles of rubbish”.
In the same month, it was revealed that Southwark Council had failed to fine a single litterer between 2021 and 2022.
Cllr Chamberlain (pictured above) said: “A rubbish mountain is not acceptable anywhere in Southwark but it’s especially embarrassing where thousands of tourists pass every day.
“It’s not fair on local residents and it paints our borough in a terrible light. Our Labour council are rubbish at rubbish.”
The Lib Dems have claimed the council’s street cleaning rota has shifted from every four to five weeks.
Southwark Council has been approached for comment.
