Next week schools across the borough return for the Autumn term after a well-deserved summer break for staff and pupils alike.
Over the past fortnight, pupils across Southwark and Lambeth have received their A-level, BTec , T-level and GCSE results after two years of hard work.
I’d like to congratulate everyone on their results and to thank the teachers, school support staff, parents and guardians who have supported every young person as they have worked towards their exams.
I hope that you or any young person in your life got the results that they need to move on to the next stage of education and employment.
This year the government decided that exam grading boundaries would return to approximately the level before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019. Despite, this pupils across Southwark, Lambeth and London continued to make improvements on the results from 2019.
London returned some of the best results in the country at GCSE this year and was only narrowly beaten into second place across the country by the Southeast at A-levels.
This is a huge improvement on where London was prior to the election of the last Labour government when London schools were the lowest performing in the whole country. And it is particularly impressive because this year’s students have faced such significant disruption to their education as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Young Cllr Joseph Vambe is an inspiration to all those looking to the future after results day
Labour is clear that pupils across the country need more support to recover from the impacts of the pandemic and to excel at school. The next Labour government will ensure that there is a mental health professional working in every secondary school in the country and we will recruit thousands of new teachers so that our schools have the resources they need to deliver a world class education everywhere.
Throughout this summer, I’ve enjoyed visiting the many summer schemes for children and young people across my constituency. T
his work is vital, providing opportunities for young people to continue to develop and grow, explore new skills, find their passion and hang out with their friends in a safe environment.
It’s been brilliant to see the great work being done on the Kingswood Estate, as well as in West Norwood and Brixton. Thank you to everyone involved in this important work.
