The Rotherhithe Tunnel has been closed in both directions this afternoon due to emergency repairs.
The tunnel, a major crossing point over the river, was closed at approximately 10am this morning for emergency maintenance.
Engineers with TfL had identified a fault with the tunnel’s fire alarms systems, and are currently working to repair the flaw.
The agency told the News it could not put a definite time-frame on when the tunnel is expected to re-open, but that it will be opened as soon as possible after engineers have finished their investigations.
The closure has caused delays in and around the tunnel area, with westbound traffic on East India Dock Road queuing back towards Burdett Road.
In its most recent update, posted an hour ago, TfL warned of slow traffic on Commercial Road westbound, Jamaica Road eastbound, and over Tower Bridge in both directions.
