A fight in Burgess Park left two men hospitalised last Sunday, with one suffering a “laceration wound”.
Police were called to the park at around 1am following reports of a fight “involving a number of people” on Sunday, August 20.
Attending officers found numerous men at the location and that a man in his forties (Man A) was suffering from a laceration wound.
An officer attempted to arrest a man in his twenties (Man B) at the scene. While being arrested, Man B was assaulted and sustained a head injury, according to police.
Both men were taken to King’s College Hospital where their injuries were assessed as neither life-threatening nor life-changing.
Man B, who sustained the head injury, was subsequently arrested.
Local officers were in Burgess Park during Sunday daytime reassuring the local community.
As is protocol when somebody is injured following contact with police, the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
A Met Police spokesperson said: “An investigation is underway after reports of a large scale fight at Burgess Park, Southwark at 0059 hours on the 20th August 2023.
“Officers attended and found a man suffering a laceration wound. As officers attempted to arrest a male in connection to this incident he was assaulted by members of the public and sustained a head injury.
“Both men were taken to Kings College Hospital where their injuries have been assessed as not life threatening or life changing. One of the men was subsequently arrested in connection to the incident.
“Local officers will be in Burgess Park today to provide reassurance to the local community. Anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak with them.
“The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards have been informed due to police contact with the man injured and the matter has been referred to the IOPC.”
