MILLWALL have seen two long unbeaten runs end recently – but Tony Craig has urged the squad to look to the next one.
The Lions’ defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the last eight of the FA Cup brought a 17-game unbeaten sequence in all competitions to an end, and last Saturday’s loss at Swindon was the first in the league since December 17.
Craig admitted there “were a few stern words said” at The County Ground following Conor Thomas’ last-gasp injury-time strike for the Robins.
Millwall go to top-of-the-table Sheffield United on Tuesday night when they wil be looking for a repeat of the performance that gave them a 2-1 win in the corresponding fixture at Bramall Lane last season.
“It was disappointing to lose but we were 16 games unbeaten, before that we only lost to Tottenham in 18 games,” Craig said.
“That run is finished now and we have to put it behind us. It wasn’t good enough but in football you need to move on very, very quickly.
“There were a few stern words said, but after any defeat there always are. That unbeaten run is gone now but hopefully we can start another one.
“We’ve got a game on Tuesday against the league leaders, it’s a perfect test or us.
“We’re a team that looks at the next game. It hurt us Saturday but we’ve come in today and are preparing for tomorrow night.”
Millwall are three points off Southend who are in sixth place in League One and have a plus-five better goal difference.
Craig believes Millwall will repeat last season’s performance and finish in the play-off places.
He said: “We know what’s at stake and what is coming. We’ve got a lot of older heads here who have been in this situation before. It’s still exciting times.
“You always have to be confident you’re going to get in there. We’re a confident bunch, we know where our strengths and weaknesses are.
“And we know we’re going to fight for it.”
