BEN Thompson was given a straight red card for the first time in his career on Tuesday night – but Portsmouth will appeal the decision.
Thompson was sent off in the 95th minute by referee John Brooks for a tackle on Lyle Taylor in Pompey’s 2-1 defeat at home to Charlton.
Portsmouth, chasing a post-war club record of nine successive wins and aiming to go nine points clear in League One, were 2-0 down at half-time after goals from Karlan Grant and substitute Nicky Ajose.
Andre Green pulled a goal back in the 88th minute before Thompson’s dismissal.
Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett questioned a number of decisions.
“The players say it was out of play for the goal, but the fact is that it wasn’t because the officials didn’t give it,” Jackett told Portsmouth’s official website.
“I think they also felt there was a handball on the line, although it’s not one I’ve looked at it because you can’t do anything if it’s not given.
“The sending-off happened right in front of me and I was very surprised when the referee showed a red card.
“It was two committed players who went in equally hard, but fairly. It was a harsh decision in my opinion and it’s one that we will be appealing.”
