FOURTEEN years ago, AFC Wimbledon held open trials on Wimbledon Common as they looked to emerge from the ashes of the MK Dons debacle.
Thanks to their 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle in the 2015-16 League Two play-off final – their sixth promotion in fourteen seasons – the Wombles will now be playing in League One for the first time in their short history.
Managed by ex-Lion Neal Ardley, AFC Wimbledon can look forward to welcoming names such as Coventry, Sheffield United and Bolton to Kingsmeadow during the next campaign.
They will also be sampling London derbies against Charlton and Millwall – with Lions legend Paul Robinson set to return to The Den for the first time as an opposition player.
After the release of powerhouse forward Adebayo Akinfenwa, the Dons will perhaps lack a physical presence up front.
If the Dons are able to keep hold of prolific front man Lyle Taylor, the club will possess a striker with the firepower needed in their attempts to remain in the third tier.
Excluding friendlies, the Lions and Wimbledon have only met twice.
Goals from Neil Harris, Jason Price (2) and Danny Schofield handed Millwall a 4-1 victory in an FA Cup First Round tie in 2009-10.
Andy Keogh and Martyn Woolford ensured safe passage through to round two of the League Cup in 2013-14, defeating their opponents 2-1.
The biggest issue for Lions fans next season may be securing a ticket for the Kingsmeadow clash.
With a capacity attendance of 4,850, AFC Wimbledon have one of the smallest grounds in the division – away tickets could well be at a premium.
