Ruskin Park paddling pool will open this summer to children and toddlers, with long-term renovations scheduled to begin this autumn.
The volunteer-run paddling pool first opened in the 1920s and was almost closed permanently in 2015 by Lambeth Council due to lack of funds.
After a huge outcry led to a fundraising drive and support from local businesses, £15,000 was raised to help fund new water pumps, paint and chemicals, and the addition of a new mural.
The pool was, however, closed once again in March 2020 due to a broken pump and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The overhaul the pool needs to bring it up to date is estimated to cost £100,000, and fundraisers are about halfway to the target.
Donors include Friends of Ruskin Park, individuals who supported the crowdfunding campaign, and local estate agents Urban Village.
But they say the pool can reopen on a reduced service, on weekends only, from the end of May Bank Holiday through to September. Weekly safety checks will also be put in place by Lambeth Council.
“It’s great to see the community and the council working in partnership to bring the much loved Ruskin Park paddling pool back to life,’ said Lambeth councillor Jim Dickson.
“We look forward to a weekend summer season this year and then use by families seven days a week in 2022.’
