One hundred and fifty residents got to see the pantomime for free thanks to the annual tradition of a tenants and residents association (TRA) in Bermondsey.
Last week, Christmas came early when Cherry Garden TRA took the group of residents to see ‘Snow White’ at Greenwich Theatre – completely free of charge.
Sheila Taylor, who is on the TRA, said it’s something they have done every year since 2017 – using the money they get from renting out the community hall.
“What’s brilliant about the pantomime is that it attracts all ages,” she told us, “from grandparents to babies on laps.
“Everybody enjoys the excitement, the singing and dancing, laughter and surprises – it’s a lovely, happy family event.”
“We nearly half-fill the theatre!” she commented.
The theatre-goers come from their TRA and the whole surrounding area, which she said ‘creates a great community spirit.’
As well as the yearly trip to the pantomime, they also give forty local pensioners a £50 Tesco gift voucher using the rest of the hall’s earnings.
“We decide who to allocate those to by asking in our newsletter for people to put themselves or their neighbours forward.”
She added that the tokens are very appreciated – with people grateful for an extra £50 at Christmastime.
