Police have launched a murder investigation after a man, aged in his 40s, was stabbed to death in Peckham.
Officers were called to Southampton Way, near the junction of Coleman Road, at 1.31am this morning (Friday, June 16).
They found a man suffering from stab injuries who, despite treatment from medical professionals, tragically died at the scene.
A man, aged in his 20s, was arrested nearby on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody where he will be questioned.
Harrowing images shared on social media show police cordons and a forensic tent erected outside a row of shops.
Local residents had reported hearing at least one helicopter in the early hours of the morning.
The deceased’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Police enquiries are ongoing.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “A murder investigation is underway following a stabbing in Southwark.
“Police were called at 01:31hrs on Friday, 16 June to Southampton Way, near the junction with Coleman Road, SE5, following reports that a man had been stabbed.
“On arrival, officers located a man, aged in his 40s, suffering with stab injuries. Despite treatment from medical professionals, the man sadly died at the scene.
“His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
“One man, aged in his 20s was arrested nearby on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody where he will be questioned. Enquiries are ongoing.”
