Two local parents are joining an international line-up of storytellers at a free family event that is coming to Southwark Park next month.
Peckham-based storytelling company, London Dreamtime, is putting on a day of free storytelling led by artists from as far as Sierra Leone and Pakistan.
Southwark Park’s Family Storytelling Day will take place on Saturday, July 8, giving the chance for families to experience different stories and cultures played out in front of them.
The line-up includes griot and story artist Usifu Jalloh (Sierra Leone) Rez Kabir (Pakistan), Diana Olutunmogun (UK) and Lonan Jenkins (Ireland).
They will be joined by two parents from the local area – Deqa Abdi Mohammed, who lives in Borough, and Ivana Lindgren, who lives in Bermondsey. Both were inspired to take part after attending previous events.
Deqa, from Somalia, is a poet and has published “Stories of Silk” a book of Somali Folk Tales.
Ivana, from Croatia, is also a puppeteer and regularly tells stories at St James School in Bermondsey.
The storytelling will take place in a magical tent next to the Moreton Terrace entrance of Southwark Park, close to the playground and cafe. You can come for an hour or stay for the day. A BSL sign language interpreter will be available, the event is wheelchair accessible.
A spokesperson from London Dreamtime said: “This event is welcoming, inclusive and kind. We thank Southwark Council for funding it.”
The event will run on Saturday, July 8 from 11 am – 4 pm in Southwark Park, Rotherhithe, Gomm Road, SE16 2TX.
Entry is FREE.
