A new leisure centre in Canada Water has reached its full height – marking an ‘important milestone’.
The centre on Deal Porters Way is being built as part of British Land’s £3.3bn, 3,000 home Canada Water Masterplan development.
Once completed, it will feature an eight-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a gym with over 150 stations, a four-court sports hall and two dance studios.
It will replace the Seven Islands leisure centre, and its popular 33-metre pool. The building will also provide over 180,000 sq ft of workspace known as the Dock Shed.
Ged Simmonds from Mace, the contractors behind the construction, said: “The topping out of Plot A2 is an exciting and important milestone for the Canada Water project.
“This building will be home to a new leisure centre, offices and retail spaces which will be enjoyed by locals and visitors to the area alike.”
Mace hired eight previously unemployed people from Southwark as part of the development and this is expected to increase by the end of the year.
Cllr Catherine Rose, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, leisure and parks at Southwark Council, said: “It’s so exciting to be one step closer to residents enjoying the new state-of-theart leisure centre at Canada Water. We’re delighted to celebrate this progress in the same month as we are taking back management of all our leisure centres to allow us to continue supporting more people to live healthier lives.”
