CHAMPIONSHIP clubs will be able to have nine substitutes on the bench from the start of next season.
That is up from seven but the number of substitutes allowed, five, will remain the same after a recent vote by the EFL.
League One and League Two clubs will still be able to make five substitutions but the number of players on their benches will remain at seven.
The Daily Mail, who broke the story since confirmed by the EFL, claimed that there were a number of reasons Championship clubs wanted the increase, including player welfare.
They also said that, with money tighter further down the leagues, travel and accommodation costs were key concerns.
Substitutions were increased from three to five during the pandemic to help with the packed fixture schedule.
Meanwhile, Millwall’s Championship game at Norwich City will be shown live on Sky Sports.
The fixture at Carrow Road was originally scheduled for Saturday, August 19 at 3pm but will now take place on Sunday, August 20 at 12pm.
