A Pro-Putin politician in Russia has suggested blowing up Tower Bridge, in retaliation to a perceived threat on a bridge built by their government.
Speaking on the state-owned Channel One, former MP Oleg Morozov floated the attack in response to the idea that claims Boris Johnson and the British armed forces are plotting to destroy the bridge linking the Russian mainland with the Crimean peninsula.
Crimea is in Ukraine but has been under Russian control since 2014.
There is no evidence the Prime Minister or Ukraine have been involved in plans to attack the Crimean Bridge.
It comes as explosions, not yet claimed by Ukraine, have been taking place in the occupied Crimea.
Morozov said that Johnson and Ukrainian politician Oleksiy Goncharenko had discussed the plan.
“According to some information, they discussed the plan to destroy the Crimean bridge,” he said
“Goncharenko said the UK discussed with him a Crimean bridge attack.
“The Crimean bridge from a military strategic point of view is similar to Tower Bridge in London.
“If the UK is discussing a Crimean bridge attack with Ukraine, why don’t we discuss using Kalibr missiles to attack Tower Bridge in return?”
In response, a pro-Putin commentator on the same TV show said that, for the analogy to be complete, he would have to discuss the attack with the Chinese government.
Morozov replied: “Yes, all the British media would go crazy then.”
Russia invaded Ukraine in February. Ukraine has held out and fought back with support from Western countries, including the UK. In recent days, several military facilities in Crimea have been blown up.
