More than 50 volunteers cleared about three tonnes of weed from the Albion Channel in Rotherhithe over the weekend.
The volunteers were organised by the Surrey Docks Angling Club and met on Saturday (November 6). People of all ages came to lend a hand to remove the weed. The removal equipment was lent by Stave Hill Ecology Park, also in Rotherhithe.
The weed can be dangerous for fish and wildlife, and the angling club said that members have had to rescue several fish in recent weeks.
A spokesperson for the angling club thanked the volunteers for “their brilliant response” in coming out at such short notice, the ecology park for providing equipment and Southwark Council for removing the bagged-up weed at the end of the day.
The club added that there will be more events to remove the weed in future and at least one more before the end of the year.
Some people have also noted that the pond in Southwark Park appears to be suffering from a similar problem.
