A cowardly teaching assistant who stamped on his heavily pregnant ex-girlfriend’s stomach to kill their unborn baby because he wasn’t ready to be a father is facing life in jail.
Kevin Wilson, 22, of Longfield Estate in Bermondsey, organised the ambush on Marks and Spencers worker Malorie Bantala when she refused his pleas to have an abortion.
He enlisted the help of a 17-year-old friend, who cannot be named, to carry out the callous attack as she walked home to the Pelican Estate, Peckham, after arranging her baby shower.
The pair stamped on the 22-year-old’s stomach in a two-minute attack as she curled into a ball crying out “my baby”. She broke two fingers trying to protect her unborn son.
Despite wearing motorcycle helmets to disguise their identity, Malorie immediately recognised Wilson’s hulking frame, his mannerisms, and his distinctive Adidas tracksuit and Nike trainers.
Wilson, a teaching assistant at Octavia House School in Walworth, had deluged his ex-girlfriend with pleas to abort the baby as he was not ready to be a father.
He even took her to an abortion clinic but she steadfastly refused to go through with the termination, the Old Bailey heard.
Malorie gave birth to a still-born baby boy by emergency Caesarean section after the attack on June 15. She needed life-saving surgery herself, the court heard.
A jury today found Wilson and the 17-year-old guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and child destruction at the end of a two week trial.
Wilson glanced at the jury as the verdicts were delivered while Miss Bantala erupted in an outburst of emotion and had to be dragged from court kicking and screaming.
She banged on the glass dock as family members hauled her from court and she shouted: “I’m going to kill you, I f***ing hate you, f***ing drop dead.”
Wilson then had to be taken down to the cells looking faint as the judge warned both they could face life sentences for the attack.
Prosecutor Jonathan Rees QC told the court: “It was plainly a despicable and wicked thing to do.
‘It makes you wonder what sort of world we live in, any normal person would be disgusted by this attack.
“There can be no doubt that the two attackers committed the offence of child destruction, the focus of this attack was the unborn baby boy.
“The shared intention of the attackers was to kill the baby.
“They subjected her to a prolonged and powerful attack aimed at her midriff, some of which were strong enough to break bones.”
TV producer Lisa Gilchrist witnessed the horrific two-minute attack from her kitchen window, as Ms Bantala curled into a ball to try and protect herself.
“The males were either side of the female kicking her stomach with as much force as they could’, she said.
“Suddenly they stopped and ran. The female was crying and screaming, she was up and stumbling, she was screaming “my baby”.”
Malorie had met Wilson in the summer of 2011 before they both started courses at the University of Bedfordshire, in Luton.
Wilson started a sexual relationship with her while they were at university, but they split up during their first year.
However, they rekindled their romance in the summer of 2014 during an end of university celebration trip to Ibiza.
Malorie then fell pregnant after the pair had unprotected sex in a hotel on 15 November last year after Wilson offered to comfort her over the death of her five-year-old nephew, Cameron.
Malorie said Wilson spent months “constantly trying to convince me to get rid of the baby.”
Wilson, of Stansfield House, Longfield Estate, Bermondsey, and the 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent and child destruction.
They will be sentenced later.
