Fisher ABC fighter Frankie Segar’s coaches were unhappy after the fourteen-year-old lost a controversial bout in Mexico at the weekend.
Segar made history as the first Fisher boxer to fight in the country and he and his coaches were confident he would bring a belt home to Bermondsey.
There were five boxers in the draw and Segar was matched with the Mexican Roydi Domingez.
Before the fight, Segar was sent video messages of support from world-famous boxers including John Ryder, Ricky Hatton, Archie Sharp, Denzil Bentley, Ted Cheeseman, the world-class trainer of Johnny Fisher, Mark Tibbs, and Sky pundit from Spencer Oliver.
Segar was told by his trainers that he would have to go out hard on the gas and maintain that throughout the entire fight.
The Fisher fighter was on top from the first bell. Coaches George and Andrew Wadman felt Segar totally dominated the first round with beautiful skill and movement.
Andrew added: “The second round we thought the opponent edged it so it was all to play for. Then in the third round, Segar again was dominating and the ref, when no punches were thrown, gave Frankie a standing count.
“Frankie came firing back and was going be the winner. After Frankie slipped some punches and attacks from the Mexican fighter, the ref pulls them apart and sends the Fisher fighter to the corner, inexplicably stopping the fight in the Mexican’s favour with 20 seconds left to go.
“We’ve studied the video there are no punches thrown by the opponent for Frankie to be stopped. It’s the worst stoppage any of us has ever seen and so bad for amateur boxing.
“We’re proud of Frankie to travel thousands of miles to take on the Mexican fighters and he did everyone proud at Fisher and in Bermondsey. We’re very excited for the future.”
