JIMMY Abdou said it was an “honour” to wear the captain’s armband for his testimonial on Saturday.
Abdou played the first five minutes in the 1-0 win over VfL Bochum at The Den before being given a standing ovation by Lions fans when he went off for George Saville.
Abdou, 34, was back on the pitch after the final whistle and admitted it was an emotional moment.
“Yeah of course, after all those years to come to the end was emotional but I’m really proud as well and grateful to the club,” he said.
“When I wear this shirt I know exactly what the gaffer wants. I just play naturally and it comes.
“I had it years ago with Kenny Jackett, twice or something. It’s an honour to wear the Millwall armband.
“A lot of memories come at the same time. [The fans] supported me all these years and I tried to give something back on the pitch.”
Saville and Shaun Williams are expected to be the midfield pairing for the first home game of the season against Middlesbrough on Saturday to continue their partnership from last season.
Abdou has backed them to maintain their excellent form.
“They had a great season last season. I watched the games and they had a good partnership. Hopefully they’ll have another good season.
“It’s going to be tough, the second year is not easy but I’m confident they can do the job.”
