FRED Onyedinma has stressed he is not prepared to sit on the bench at this stage of his career, with his loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers set to come to an end on January 1.
Onyedinma has been in good form recently for Gareth Ainsworth’s League One side, enjoying a regular run and last month scoring in successive league games for the first time in three-and-a-half years.
Onyedinma, who turns 22 later this month, made his 150th Lions appearance earlier this season, against Gillingham in the EFL Cup, but over half of those have been as a substitute.
Nigeria-born Onyedinma knew at the end of last season that he wanted to leave Millwall on loan after starting just seven league games in 2017-18.
He returned for a second loan spell with the Chairboys, for whom he has made 14 appearances this season.
Onyedinma knows that if he goes back to Millwall in January he is likely to be behind four strikers vying for a place in Neil Harris’ starting line-up. Onyedinma has mostly played on the left and right wings for Wycombe, but Millwall are also well-stocked in those positions.
“Things can change. I could go back to Millwall and start playing,” Onyedinma told NewsAtDen this week. “Really and truly, with me, I would just want to play more regularly because that’s where I’m going to get the best out of myself. It’s not in a selfish way, but it’s your career so you have to get the best out of it at whatever team you’re at.
“I’m at Wycombe now and I am playing regularly, so that’s something I would obviously have to look at.
“You have to find something that works for you and keep doing it and strive to keep getting better.”
Onyedinma admitted he hasn’t discussed his short-term future with Harris. “I know what football is like,” he said. “One month you’re there and playing well and that can change in the next six months. You have to keep working harder than ever and your time will come.
“I haven’t spoken to Neil. I’m sure they do watch the games but I haven’t been physically in contact.”
