NEIL Harris will leave it to his players to decide who will take a penalty if Millwall are awarded one against Birmingham on Saturday.
Lee Gregory was unsuccessful from the spot last Saturday against Brentford as Millwall missed out on securing another Championship point.
Harris revealed he did offer his opinion on spot-kick duties last season after Gregory saw two penalties saved in injury-time by Oldham goalkeeper Connor Ripley in a game that finished scoreless.
“It’s down to the dressing room, I don’t think it’s down to me,” Harris said. “I stepped in after Oldham to say about two penalties being taken: is it right for the same player to take the second one? That’s a grey area.
“I thought Lee struck the penalty really well at the weekend and it was a good save. Was it a mental thing in that he had just had a goal disallowed? He’s had the ref and the centre-half messing about, and the time between the award of the penalty and actually taking it was a hell of a long time. The ref didn’t have control of the situation.
“Lee maybe wasn’t 100 per cent mentally right for the kick.
“It’ll be a decision on the pitch at the time. Lee was chomping at the bit to take it, he had struck some really good ones in training on Friday.
“It’ll be the players’ decision and Lee’s decision.”
Tom Elliott, meanwhile, has said he will put his hand up to take a spot-kick the next time his side are given one.
Referring to rumours that PSG offered Edinson Cavani €1 million to allow team-mate Neymar to take all future penalties after the pair’s embarrassing fight over the ball in a league game against Lyon in September, Elliott joked that he wouldn’t be in a position to tempt Gregory into relinquishing spot-kick duties with a financial reward.
In contrast to Harris, PSG manager Unai Emery has said he will decide who will take penalties from now on.
Elliott insisted: “I’m going to say, ‘yes’, I will put my hand up for the next one. I’m going to grab the ball.
“I haven’t got a million pounds to give to Gregs to take the pen – I’ll give him a tenner if he wants!”
