MICHAEL Obafemi returned to training this week and is set to be in contention to face his former club Southampton this weekend.
Obafemi missed the Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday games through illness, but could give Joe Edwards a welcome boost ahead of Saturday’s trip to the south coast.
The head coach confirmed: “Michael is back out on the pitch. He was blowing the cobwebs off a bit [on Monday] to rejoin the group.
“Hopefully he will train this week to give him a run in to the game on Saturday. It is not an ideal position in terms of what condition he is in, but he is back with us and will be available.”
Meanwhile, the Saints’ nine-game winning league run at St Mary’s ended on Tuesday with with a 2-1 defeat to Hull City.
“Credit to Hull, they were really aggressive but we have faced a lot of aggressive teams here and done a lot better,” Southampton manager Russell Martin said.
“The second half looks very different because Joe Aribo had the courage to take the ball, Che Adams had the courage.
“There was a lot of moans at Gavin [Bazunu] when he did stuff with the ball but it’s not on him and he was outstanding when he actually had people to pass to.
“I really understand the frustration around the whole place but the crowd were amazing in the second half and really stuck with us.”
