WHEN you think of Millwall and Scunthorpe United, one date springs to mind – May 24, 2009.
On a scorching-hot day at Wembley Stadium, Gary Alexander’s memorable strike shook the ground’s foundations to it’s very core, as he put the Lions 2-1 up in the League One play-off final.
Unfortunately, it was all in vain, as ex-Lion Martyn Woolford’s late winner sent the Iron into the Championship, but it was a day to remember for all involved.
The meeting between the two sides at The Den in 2015-16 was a more low-key affair.
On a rare but catastrophic off night for Neil Harris’ Lions, Scunthorpe eased to a 2-0 win – but that was to be the club’s last home defeat of the campaign.
Back in late August, Jordan Archer made his full league debut as the two clubs battled to a goalless draw at Glanford Park.
Under veteran Graham Alexander, the Iron will be looking for a top-six finish in 2016-17.
Transfer activity has been light in Lincolnshire, but news of a double signing in recent days should keep the Scunthorpe faithful happy.
Winger Josh Morris has joined from Bradford City, whilst midfielder Sam Mantom has become the latest to join the Walsall exodus, moving to Glanford Park on a free transfer following the expiration of his Saddlers contract.
In 2016-17, the two clubs will meet on December 17th and April 1st, with the Lions hosting the Iron second.
