MILLWALL boss Neil Harris said he wasn’t aware of any enquires from clubs for Jordan Archer while the goalkeeper was mulling over signing a new contract with the club.
Harris said a number of weeks ago the club had made Archer “an extremely good offer” but there were concerns over his future as the former Tottenham player left the contract unsigned.
Everton and Swansea reportedly send scouts to check on Archer’s progress last season.
After the 5-1 defeat to Peterborough Harris alluded to his annoyance at representatives of players making certain demands, though there was no hint he was referring to the Archer situation.
But any fears Archer was seeking a move elsewhere were allayed before Tuesday night’s 2-0 win over West Brom in the EFL Trophy when it was announced that he had committed himself to the club for a further three years until the summer of 2019.
Archer signed a two-year deal when he joined from Spurs last summer but Millwall moved to offer him improve terms after a season in which he claimed the number one jersey from David Forde and helped the Lions to Wembley.
Harris was pleased to secure Archer’s long-term future, but admitted the situation has been a distraction.
“He’s a top young goalkeeper,” Harris said. “I don’t think he’s played his best football these last few weeks.
“I thought he was better last Saturday (at Chesterfield), actually, but I don’t think he played his best football while contract negotiations have been going on.
“But he’s tied down now and he’s fully focussed on getting back down to business on the football pitch.”
