MILLWALL’S Harry Smith will take time away from football to deal with depression and with a gambling addiction.
Smith, 22, made the announcement on his Twitter account on Friday.
The striker has been suffering from a knee problem after a spell on loan with Swindon earlier this season.
Millwall have offered their “absolute support” to the player.
“I have made a decision to take some time away from football to seek some help in relation to depression and gambling issues which I’ve been battling for a number of years,” Smith wrote.
“Has not been an easy decision to make for me but has been made easier with the support of my close friends, agency, the club and most importantly my parents and the gaffer.
“Football is my life but I just feel especially the last 12 months I’ve not kicked on & it’s been tough having to deal with these issues while trying to perform to a high standard which ultimately I don’t think I’ve done enough.
“For the first time in a long time I am starting to see a way forward.”
In a statement, Millwall said: “As has been the case throughout, the club will continue to offer Harry its absolute support and guidance, as it would do for any player or member of staff connected to Millwall, at a difficult time for him and his family.
“The club will make no further comment at this time and politely request that Harry’s privacy is respected.”
