London Metropolitan Police has released the statistics revealing which parts of Southwark saw the most criminality in January.
The News has gathered the data to break down which were the most dangerous wards in the borough for that month.
1. Borough and Bankside: 376 crimes recorded
Borough and Bankside has the most crimes (376) recorded of any ward in January.
That’s down from a peak of 496 but the ward’s huge footfall and frequent thefts mean police are often called to the area.
Bike thefts and shoplifting are often to blame for the high crime rate and there were 193 incidents in total, including 125 ‘other thefts’ 68 ‘thefts from the person’.
‘Other theft’ includes all theft in which the item stolen was not on the person at the time.
There were also 41 violent and sexual offences and 39 incidents of anti-social behaviour.
2. North Walworth: 303 crimes recorded
North Walworth, which includes Walworth Road and stretches to Old Kent Road, had 303 crimes recorded.
Anti-social behaviour is a serious challenge for local police, who recorded 70 separate such incidents.
There were also 53 violent and sexual offences, 28 ‘other thefts’ and 27 ‘thefts from the person’.
Last month, a middle-aged man was stabbed in Hampton Street, part of which falls within the ward.
3. London Bridge and West Bermondsey: 302 crimes recorded
London Bridge and West Bermondsey often comes in at first place on this list, but its crime rate has been falling in recent months.
From a peak of 468 in October, recorded crimes fell to 466 in November, 393 in December and 302 in January
There were 74 ‘other thefts’, 51 violent and sexual offences, 48 thefts from the person and 35 anti-social behaviour incidents.
4. Chaucer: 227 crimes recorded
Chaucer had its highest number of recorded crimes over the last 12 months in January.
Unlike most of the top five wards, this wasn’t driven by thefts. Instead, there were 50 anti-social behaviour incidents, 47 violent and sexual offences.
Its 23-case burglary rate was also one of the highest of any ward in Southwark.
