A free weekly reading group for adults wanting to immerse themselves in literature is starting in Walworth in 2024.
On Sundays, starting January 14, Somali writer and photographer Amaal Said will be choosing a different poem and a piece of prose to discuss each week.
“Anyone over 18 can apply,” the 28-year-old told us, “but I’m asking that people commit to thirty sessions.
“I’m hoping to create a little community.”
The Royal Literary Fund is a charity that helps writers in financial difficulty hold educational programmes to use their talents to benefit communities.
Amaal is one of 20 facilitators across the UK – and as a Walworth resident chose to host it at her local library.
“It can be about introducing people to literature,” she continued, “and there is no homework so the idea is just for people to turn up, listen and talk.”
“No literary knowledge is necessary and individuals at all stages are encouraged to apply,” she added.
