I was very disappointed to learn in last week’s News that social tenants and shared-ownership occupiers at a Bermondsey development are not allowed to access the onsite gym facilities – even if they are prepared to pay extra to do so!
This is another example of a wider and deeply worrying trend we’re seeing more and more in parts of Southwark. I’m talking about the poor being forced to make way for the rich.
Is this what regeneration is supposed to do?
Even the poor folks that cling on are only tolerated so long as they keep out of sight.
The worst aspect of this backwards step for society is that the council, and a Labour one at that, are facilitating it. They should be ashamed of themselves.
