Charity FoodCycle has praised a Peckham grocer for its support after helping to provide hundreds of free meals in the last few months.
Volunteers from FoodCycle Peckham have teamed up with Bellenden Road’s Village Grocer to put unwanted food waste to better use and help families in need.
The organisation has been collecting leftover produce from Village Grocer since the end of June this year which has been used to make a bi-weekly free community meal anyone can join.
Known as the ‘Peckham Project’, the meal is held at 5pm every Wednesday and 5.30pm at All Saints Church Hall on Blenheim Grove.
FoodCycle’s London regional manager, Becca Ketley says: “Village Grocer have been brilliant, consistently giving us a few boxes of surplus food, at least 10kg twice a week and it’s always fresh fruit and vegetables which are just coming to the end of their sale by date but still great to eat.
“On a Wednesday one of our volunteers goes by in their car to pick it up and on a Saturday one of the cooking team goes round with a wheelie bag so its all hands on deck.
“This local support has become essential to us feeding the local community with tasty vegetarian meals this year.”
