The Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Poppy Appeal was joined by the Mayor of Southwark for a poppy selling event on Saturday (October 30).
Local poppy appeal chief organiser Jill Merrett and deputies Geraldine Howard and Ken Higgins took part in the ceremony in Surrey Quays shopping centre alongside Cllr Barrie Hargrove, the borough’s mayor, who often attends ceremonial events.
Two Royal British Legion standard bearers held flags, which they lowered during a performance of the Last Post and Southwark sea cadets also helped collect money. Singer Jay Britton gave a rendition of the hymn Jerusalem. The amount of money raised is so far unclear because organisers have not counted yet.
A remembrance service is going to be held at the West Lane War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday, November 14.
