A record 76 per cent of GCSE students at Bermondsey’s City Of London Academy Southwark achieved five A*-C grades, including English and Mathematics, which is an eight percentage point increase on last year.
The academy also boasted a ten per cent increase in pupils achieving the English Baccalaureate measure, and almost twenty per cent of pupils achieving eight A*-A grades.
The Academy’s results buck the national trend which has seen a decline in overall results.
Principle Richard Bannister said: “I am delighted to say that our students have achieved a fantastic set of results. This is testimony to the hard work of our pupils and dedication of our staff. It is great to see social mobility in action.”
Catherine McGuinness, Chairman of the Education Board at The City of London Corporation, said: “We are very proud of how hard our students have worked, and we are delighted that this hard work has translated into tangible results which will enable them to pursue the further education opportunities and careers of their choice.
“We wish them well, and look forward to welcoming some of the students back to the Sixth Form in September.”
Shelley Ramirez, 16, who got one A*, six As and three Bs said: “I didn’t learn English till I arrived here three years ago from Spain. I learnt the language by staying in school and watching TV. I watched Family Guy and Criminal Minds. I had the subtitles on.”
