GARY Rowett hailed the Millwall fans for their support of the club’s youth team at Chelsea last Thursday.
Rowett was in the stand as Larry McAvoy and Chris Perry’s side lost 1-0 to the Blues in their FA Youth Cup quarter-final in front of 1,000 away fans at Stamford Bridge.
“They did really well,” Rowett said. “It was a really difficult game for them because if you open up too much against Chelsea – they won their previous game 7-0 – you’re going to get picked off. They’re a top side full of athletes.
“They had a couple of opportunities to attack, they caused Chelsea one or two problems. There were some real positives to come out of it so credit to everyone.
“I think a massive positive as well was the fans, they were incredible. I’ve never seen 1,000 fans make so much noise.
“They don’t realise but we actually got caught up in them going into the game. They started singing the hokey-cokey, which was an interesting experience as they surged forward!
“It was brilliant, you could have watched them for 45 minutes. It typifies the spirit in the club that the fans will go and watch the kids and get behind them as much as they would the first team.”
