JOE MARTIN scored his first goal in a Millwall shirt since his summer move from Gillingham – but he said it counted for nothing as the Lions lost 2-1 at Burton Albion.
Martin was quickest to react a few yards out in the 75th minute to poke the ball to the net after pinball in the Brewers area.
That invigorated the away side and they pressed incessantly for an equaliser with Burton forced into several desperate late clearances.
But Millwall couldn’t rescue anything from the game and Martin said he would have swapped his goal for a result.
“I wasn’t marked and was on the edge of the box so the gaffer told me to go in,” he said. “I was looking for a little knockdown and just tapped it in.
“But you don’t get anything for losing. I’d have preferred to at least get something out of the game than score.”
Martin was also frustrated with some of referee Oliver Langford’s decisions, particularly the red card he dished out to Mark Beevers and also when he failed to award a penalty for a foul on Aiden O’Brien after earlier whistling for handball before the striker found the net.
The left-back explained: “I didn’t really see how Aiden’s goal was disallowed, to be honest, I thought it was very harsh. But the bigger one for me was it should have been a penalty for Aiden in the second half.
“To me it was a stonewall penalty. It was 2-1 at the time and we were putting them under a lot of pressure throughout the whole of the second half.
“The sending off, anyone on our team will tell you (Beevers’) momentum has taken him over the player, I don’t really know what the ref saw.
“Their players have made a bit of a fuss about it so that’s what’s got him sent off.”
