MILLWALL look set to decide between three contenders for the vacant manager’s job.
Current caretaker Adam Barrett, Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth and former Derby and Stoke manager Gary Rowett are in the frame.
Barrett is set to take charge of next Saturday’s trip to Brentford, his second game at the helm after Neil Harris’ departure last Thursday week.
There could be a decision on who the next permanent manager is by early next week.
Ainsworth jumped into favourite for the full-time post early on Tuesday, at 2/1 with several bookies, just ahead of Rowett.
Rowett, 45, was asked about the Lions post when he was on punditry duty for Birmingham’s home clash against Middlesbrough on Sky Sports last Friday week.
He didn’t deny he could be interested in succeeding Harris. “When a job comes up, that’s got a very strong fan base and a really good tradition about the club, loads of people are going to be interested.”
Ainsworth, 46, has worked on a restricted budget at Wycombe since taking over in 2012. He led the Chairboys to promotion from League Two in 2018 and they are currently in second place in League One.
Ainsworth also enjoyed success against Millwall when his Wycombe side knocked the Lions out of the second round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win in December 2015.
Millwall have made contact with a number of potential candidates, as they carefully weigh up who is the best manger to take the club forward.
