JAKE Cooper admitted it was a “massive relief” to get his first goal of the season – and he hopes the ribbing he’s been getting from his team-mates now stops.
Cooper’s header from Jed Wallace’s free-kick turned out to be the winner against Bristol City on Tuesday night.
It was his first goal since his injury-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Sheffield United last April.
“It was massive relief, you could see from the celebrations it was a weight off my shoulders,” Cooper said. “Hopefully I can get some more the rest of the season.
“I’ve had a bit of stick with the lack of goals and I’ve taken it quite to heart. I put myself under pressure to score goals. They see that and have shown me a lot of joy now that I’m finally off the mark.
“I was desperate for a goal and they know that. A bit of stick here and there is all fun and games but now hopefully now it stops.
“It’s good to score an away goal in front of the fans, I’ve done it a few times. Especially the position we were in to score in front of them and show my passion was really enjoyable.”
Cooper praised Wallace, who scored his eighth goal of the season on Tuesday.
Cooper said: “It’s just his confidence, if you could bottle confidence and give it to us all we could do something special.
“He’s certainly got that at the minute and every touch is leading to something. Long may it continue.
“He’s a great lad and it’s great to see him performing well for the team. We’re really happy for him.”
