BILLY Mitchell was pleased with how he played in his first three games back from injury, but admitted that he found it difficult in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic.
The Lions were beaten at the DW Stadium despite a first-half equaliser from George Saville, with Will Keane and substitute Thelo Aasgard making sure that the visitors suffered their fourth loss in seven games.
As a result, Gary Rowett‘s men have dropped out of the play-offs and will likely need to win their final two games if they are to stand a chance of securing a top-six finish at the end of the season.
Mitchell, who returned to Millwall’s squad for their 0-0 draw at home to Luton Town earlier this month after eight weeks out with an ankle injury, has started alongside George Saville in the last four games, but Saturday’s clash with the Latics was ultimately a step too far for him and his teammates.
“I actually felt good in the first three games back – Hull, Preston and Birmingham,” the midfielder told NewsAtDen.
“I felt like I performed pretty well in all of those, I felt pretty sharp coming back in, which I didn’t really expect. From going to playing all of the minutes to being off for such a long time, I thought that it might have killed the flow, but I felt pretty good in terms of my levels when I came back.
“I didn’t feel particularly at the races on Saturday, which I can’t really afford to feel like at this stage of the season.
“I think my ankle is fine, which is good news. I’ve got no problems with that, which is quite pleasing. But at this stage, you don’t really care how you do it, you just want to get results.
“The most frustrating thing is that it’s been in our hands and now it’s not. Even if we win both of our remaining games, we’re still going to be reliant on other results. That’s the thing that’s hard to swallow.”
