IN perfect symmetry, Millwall’s last home league game of last season is their first of 2016-17.
A Shane Ferguson strike accompanied a Byron Webster double in a comfortable 3-0 win for Millwall on April 30 – a victory that mathematically assured the Lions’ play-off place.
John Sheridan was the Latics’ manager on that day, but due to his departure to Notts County in the close-season, Oldham are now left without a boss with pre-season looming.
Steve Evans, the former Leeds manager, has publicly turned down the role, whilst names such as ex-Norwich boss Neil Adams and Manchester United legend Paul Scholes have also been linked.
At 40/1, the bookies see Oldham as the outsiders – and favourites for relegation to League Two.
Dominic Poleon and Johnathan Forte will be the two men charged with firing the Latics to safety, whilst the defence will be looking to remain as tight as it was in 2015-16.
With just 58 goals conceded, Oldham had a more secure back-line than the entire bottom half, plus Sheffield United and Rochdale in the top 12.
In addition to the 3-0 win in the penultimate weekend of the campaign, the Lions also claimed victory over Oldham at Boundary Park in early January.
Jed Wallace made his debut after joining on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers and within two minutes, he had made an impact.
The winger’s cross eventually made its way to Lee Gregory inside the box, who tapped home to give the Lions an early lead.
Oldham equalised shortly into the second half, but Steve Morison stooped to head home late on and give Neil Harris’ side all three points.
