Struggling Bermondsey Town edged out Fleetdown United 1-0 at St Paul’s Sports Ground in the Kent County Football League Premier Division on Saturday afternoon.
Going into the game against third-place United, Town were without a win since August and sat fifteenth out of sixteen teams in the table.
The hosts dominated the opening 20 minutes and had some opportunities but couldn’t take them.
United went close to opening the scoring just before half-time but Bermondsey goalkeeper Kane Charles made a superb stop.
Five minutes into the second half, Anthony Audu played a lovely ball over the top to send forward Agbor Sobeh through on goal, and he calmly slotted it into the back of the net to edge Bermondsey in front.
The second half was very much like the first half, neither side finishing their decent chances but some good football being played.
Despite some late pressure from Fleetdown, Town stood strong and clinched just their second win of the season after nineteen games.
Town manager Stuart Wilson said: “Really good performance today and a massive three points. Hopefully that is the beginning of a turnaround.”
Town are now two games unbeaten with two clean sheets following a 0-0 draw the previous week away to Welling Park.
Bermondsey are away to Hawkinge Town next Saturday at 2pm. Hawkinge are second in the league, two points off Halls AFC.
After their last match of 2023, the club said: “Thank you to the 40 fans in attendance at St Paul’s this afternoon and thank you for everybody’s support in 2023. Happy New Year to you all.”
