Around 25 firefighters and four fire engines were called out to a fire raging through flats in Peckham this morning (14 March).
The fire broke out in a block of flats on Hanover Park in the early hours of the morning.
Firefighters clad in special breathing apparatus assisted five people to safety down the building’s stairs.
Part of a four-roomed flat on the third floor of the building was badly damaged by the flames.
No injuries were reported to the emergency services.
An extractor hood is believed by the London Fire Brigade to have been involved in the fire, although its exact cause is currently unknown.
Can you guess how many fires there were in Southwark last year?
“There were smoke alarms fitted inside the affected flat, but they didn’t raise the alarm,” said a spokesperson from the Brigade.
“This incident is a reminder about the importance of ensuring you have working smoke alarms in every room where a fire could start in your home, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen.
“Make sure to test them regularly,” they added.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze just after midnight at 12:37 a.m. and brought the flames under control in less than an hour at 01:46 a.m.
Crews from Peckham, New Cross, Old Kent Road and Brixton fire stations attended the scene.
