A distinctive South Bank sign has been recognised as being especially significant in Lambeth Council’s ‘local list’.
The colour-coded fingerpost, dating back to the era of the Greater London Council, is among hundreds of objects and buildings earmarked for conservation.
The signpost, situated at Waterloo Bridge’s southern end, directs pedestrians to Hayward Gallery, the National Theatre and other important landmarks.
Tim Dunn, presenter on ‘The Architecture the Railways Built’, nominated the waymarker for recognition.
The 20th Century Society, a group preserving architecture built after 1900, wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “This fabulous GLC-era fingerpost on London’s Southbank has now been added to the Lambeth local list! Bravo to @MrTimDunn for proposing it.”
The local list also includes a Gothic-revival church in Brixton, The Duke of Sussex pub in Waterloo and a Chopin sculpture at Royal Festival Hall.
