Millwall Lionesses boss Jack Wheeler said he was “really proud” of his side after they came agonisingly close to producing one of the shocks of the first round of the FA Cup against Gillingham at the weekend.
The Lionesses led in injury-time at the end of extra-time before the Gills levelled and then won 5-4 on penalties.
Gillingham are in the National League, two divisions above Millwall.
“I’m really proud of the girls,” Wheeler told Lionesses media. “I thought we stuck to the game plan really well and they left everything out on the pitch.
“What we asked them to do at the start of the game was just try and work as hard as they possibly could, take the game to Gillingham.
“I’m really pleased with how we did and I’m just pleased with how we did and to concede with the last kick in extra-time, fine margins make the biggest difference.
“But, listen, we learn and we move on. We’re really pleased with the team and how they stuck together, both the staff and the players.”
