When Cllr McAsh scrapped plans for a borough-wide controlled parking zone (CPZ), we wrote an editorial warning that the “saga may not be over” and, sadly, we were right.
Southwark Council has undoubtedly compromised. Its latest proposals have massively shrunk the size of the CPZs compared to what it put forward last summer. But rather than being placated, campaign group Oppose the CPZ seems to have been emboldened, fighting against the newly-proposed zones as well as old ones.
They will point to the council’s consultation data, which they say shows the majority of residents surveyed don’t want parking permit schemes on their roads – the council says this just isn’t a correct interpretation.
With these two sides at loggerheads, and a gulf of opinion between them, it’s hard to see this debate having a happy ending.
