Hundreds of illuminated boats will float down the Thames tomorrow (Saturday, September 24), as part of a “majestically evolving light and colour show”.
150 boats will leave Albert Bridge at 7pm, pass under the seven illuminated river bridges, and finish at a Tower Bridge “bathed in purple light”.
‘Reflections’ is being dedicated to her late Majesty the Queen and will see London’s bridges dazzle with light shows by lighting artist Leo Villarreal.
Thames Festival Trust said: “As the boats glide peacefully by, it will allow those viewing to remember the past and think positively about the future.
“London’s River Thames has played an important role in many royal and state occasions over the centuries, and this memorable event will continue this age-old tradition.
“Reflections is thought to be the first illuminated flotilla to be seen on the Thames for over three hundred years.”
The flotilla will feature both manpowered and motorised vessels with the Queen’s row barge, Gloriana, the centrepiece, manned by celebrity rower and TV presenter Ben Fogle.
The event will raise up to £20,000 for the RNLI, supporting the construction of a new lifeboat station at Waterloo Bridge.
The flotilla starts at Albert Bridge, goes through central London, passing beneath Chelsea Bridge at 7pm, Westminster Bridge at 7.30pm, and finishing at Tower Bridge at 8.15pm.
