An art exhibition aimed at “tackling racial inequality” is being held at the Southwark Heritage Centre and Walworth Library.
The ‘I Create’ exhibition is displaying work including experimental film and queer theatre from local Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds until Monday, July 24.
Each artist received a grant from Southwark Council and mentoring from artists at celebrated local institutions, including the Tate and the Central School of Ballet.
Councillor Catherine Rose, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Leisure, and Parks, said: “The I Create exhibition is a true celebration of the profound talents of our under-represented artists.
“Southwark boasts a vibrant creative community, but we acknowledge the barriers faced by artists from marginalised backgrounds. As a council, we are committed to nurturing local talent by providing funding, mentorship and network opportunities.”
Artists on display include Hope Strickland, a British-Jamaican filmmaker whose work explores how Victorian city-planning influences contemporary life.
Chinelo L. Njaka has worked with the Dulwich Picture Gallery to use fabric portraiture and storytelling to reveal the lives of historical and contemporary Black personalities figures from Southwark.
Oluwaseun Olayiwola is a Nigerian-American dancer, choreographer, poet and critic who dance piece interrogates the masculinity and the concept of the ‘male gaze
There are also displays from theatre maker Sergio Maggiolo, multi-disciplinary artist OYOKO, interdisciplinary artist Daniel Oduntan, and photographer Amaal Said.
The exhibition has been on at Southwark Heritage Centre and Walworth Library from Monday, July 10 to Monday July 24.
