TONY Craig’s playing career with Millwall is over – almost 15 years after he made his Lions debut.
Craig has had his contract paid up by the club and is expected to sign a deal with League One Bristol Rovers.
Craig – who will be 33 in April – was in Millwall’s squad last night for the 0-0 draw with Derby County at The Den.
He travelled to Bristol today for a medical and to agree personal terms with Darrell Clarke’s side.
Craig’s last appearance for the club he made his senior debut for in April 2003 was in the 2-2 draw against Rochdale last Saturday – his 300th Lions start.
He started his career with the club he supports before he went to Crystal Palace at the beginning of the 2007-08 season. He re-joined Millwall first on loan later that campaign and then on a permanent deal in July 2008.
After a loan spell with Leyton Orient Craig signed for Brentford in 2012, helping them win promotion to the Championship in 2014.
After Neil Harris was appointed Millwall boss on a permanent basis he made Craig his main defensive target, and handed his former team-mate the club armband in the summer of 2015. Craig had his Millwall testimonial against Brentford at The Den in July 2016.
Craig played in four League One play-off finals for Millwall, skippering the side and lifting the trophy at Wembley after they defeated Bradford 1-0 last May.
Craig was always expected to leave this month after just four starts this season following the arrival of James Meredith last summer. Millwall wanted a player in before letting Craig go, and with Harry Toffolo arriving from Norwich on Monday he was free to tie up his move to Rovers.
Craig scored his last Millwall goal against Rovers, in the epic 4-3 win at the Memorial Stadium last April that sealed a play-off place.
Steve Morison will be Millwall’s new club captain, with Shaun Hutchinson vice-captain.
