GARY Rowett has revealed that Millwall are actively looking to sign another attacking player – but couldn’t confirm whether or not it’ll be a striker.
The Lions boss has already secured a season-long loan deal for highly-rated Tottenham youngster Troy Parrott, who’ll join the rest of his new teammates at Calmont Road for the start of pre-season today, and has been linked with a move for Wigan frontman Kieffer Moore, who looks set to leave the Latics after their relegation to League One was confirmed last Tuesday.
Millwall are still hoping to negotiate a deal for Mason Bennett, who scored twice in nine games during a loan spell at The Den in the second half of last season, whilst Aiden O’Brien wasn’t offered a new contract and joined Sunderland.
“The Kieffer Moore one was a player that the club chased last season and we felt there was really good value there because of Wigan’s predicament, so of course that was one that we were looking into,” Rowett admitted. “We were actively involved in that, I won’t say auction, but there were actively a few clubs in for him.
“The question being really, having bought in Troy, is that we are in a slightly better position in terms of that we’re not necessarily desperate to bring in another striker.
“I would like to bring in another player to that forward line, but where that player fits into the forward line depends on the quality of player we can get.
“We’re not close, but we’re chasing two or three different things. It’s such a difficult market, I think if you look, there’s been hardly any activity, and I think it’s because the values have dropped. There’s a lot less being done, and it means that you can’t move players on as easily from your own squad.
“That in turn leaves you in a bit of a predicament with a smaller income due to no fans being there. I think most managers and most clubs are going to have to accept that they’re not going to quite do as much business as they maybe would in different circumstances, but we are still looking to do two or three things.
“It would be unfair to name names and talk individually about players, but there are quite a few players that if the deals are right for us then we will try and pursue them. At the moment there are conversations, and we will see where those conversations lead.”
